Keeping children safe is a top priority for all Early Childhood programs. Active Supervision “ensure no child is left alone or unsupervised by staff, consultants, contractors, or volunteers while under their care.” But what is active supervision and how will it benefit children and staff. Learn fun new strategies to keep children safe and engaged. (2 DCDEE contact hours).

August 25th Toxic Stress and Its Impact on Children
Stress is a fact of life, no matter your age. Some stress is good for us – it keeps us attentive, sharp, productive, and learning. But Toxic Stress affects brain development and learning in young children, and can have long-lasting effects. This session will help participants define stress responses and understand the difference between “tolerable” and “toxic” stress. We’ll look at the long-term effects of Toxic Stress and investigate practices for mitigating those effects and promoting resilience in young children. (2 DCDEE contact hours).

August 30th Meaningful Center Play
Children need the various types of play in order to support and facilitate meaningful learning opportunities as they develop language, motor, social, emotional, and cognitive abilities. The effects of these developments are seen in the classroom with better academic performance and improved concentration. Learn new ways to enhance your center-based opportunities to ensure your children are fully engaged in all day learning. (2 DCDEE contact hours).

September 8th Partnering with Families to Address Challenging Behaviors: We Are All in This Together!
When a child uses challenging behaviors at school, parents and teachers need to work together to address the issue. However, when discussing behavior problems parents often feel blamed by the teachers and the teachers often feel unsupported by the parents. This session focuses on developing strategies and skills to make these conversations more productive for everyone...especially the child! Participants will learn how to set the stage for and successfully conduct these difficult conversations with parents. (2 DCDEE contact hours).

September 17th “Back to Basics” Virtual Day of Training

September 22nd It’s SIDS
This training developed by NC Healthy Start Foundation's ITS-SIDS will meet state requirements. During this session, we will discuss what is SIDS, and how to reduce the risk of SIDS with safe sleep practices. Safe Sleep Policy guidelines, NC Division of Child Development and Early Education licensing rule, maintenance of the proper forms, and other “Best Practice” recommendations will be reviewed. (2 DCDEE contact hours).

October 4th Embedding Gross Motor Play Throughout the Day Can Decrease Challenging Behaviors
TRAINING - Richmond County Partnership for Children (2)Prepare children for strong emotions by providing tools and teaching strategies. Gross motor play can be helpful in decreasing increased stress. Practice daily or more often! Learn how you can add new ideas in your classroom. (2 DCDEE contact hours).

October 18th Grief and Loss in Young Children: Helping Young Children Cope
Death and loss are a part of life that affects young children. The emotional pain of a child who has lost a loved one makes it tempting to avoid the subject or to try to distract the child. When a loss is not addressed appropriately by adults it may leave the child feeling confused or promote a feeling of distrust. While we would all like to shield children from grief, the reality is that they will all experience it at one time or another. This session will define most common times of grief and loss for young children, identify stages of grief, discover ways young children react behaviorally to grief and loss, and determine ways to support children through this process. (2 DCDEE contact hours).

October 27th Open-ended Art
Hands On activities to promote more Open-Ended Art in the classroom for all children. To introduce the concept that Open-Ended Art helps develop visual -spatial processing, build memory& self-control, it contributes to fine motor skill development, finally, it stimulates creativity and problem-solving skills. (2 DCDEE contact hours).

November 10th Developmentally Appropriate Behavior - But, I'm Supposed to Act Like This!
Children use many different kinds of behavior as they grow and test their skills. Some of these behaviors, although appropriate for their developmental age, are still very challenging for teachers. This session focuses on understanding when children can be expected to acquire certain social-emotional skills and guides participants toward understanding, respecting and responding to developmentally appropriate behaviors. (2 DCDEE contact hours).

November 15th Nature and Science
Participants will learn how easy it is to incorporate nature and science into the everyday workings of the classroom. There will be several activities to help providers overcome fears of using science in the classroom. Providers will be exposed to several experiments and activities with science and nature also stimulate children’s curiosity, encourages use of all five senses and help build child’s vocabulary. (2 DCDEE contact hours).

December 13th Preventing Challenging Behaviors: An Ounce of Prevention is Worth A Pound of Cure!
TRAINING - Richmond County Partnership for Children (3)The environment a teacher creates, paired with her knowledge of the children in her care, can prevent many challenging behaviors in young children. Teachers who create positive social environments find that children more easily develop the social emotional skills they need to succeed. This session focuses on modifications teachers can make in six key areas in the environment that will prevent and reduce conflict that leads to challenging behaviors. (2 DCDEE contact hours).
