Three dogs face destruction for chewing off arm of boy MURFREESBORO, Tenn.

(AP) The owner of three dogs that chewed off the arm of a 2-yearold boy said the dogs aren't violent, but he'll have two of them destroyed anyway. Little Tyler Throneberry was attacked when he stuck his arm through a neighbor's fence on Wednesday. Surgeons at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville operated for more than six hours but were unable to reattach the arm. Tyler also had bites and cuts on his face and chest, police said. He was in critical condition Thursday at Vanderbilt's pediatric intensive care unit.

Hospital officials declined to discuss details of the injuries and doctors' efforts to save Tyler's arm pending a meeting with his family. Col. Virgil Gammon of the Rutherford County Sheriff's Department said Tyler was playing when he stuck his arm through his neighbor's fence, behind which were two Rottweilers and an Akita. "'The dogs were in their (own) yard," Gammon said. "He apparently reached through the fence, and the dogs tried to pull him through." The dogs were placed in the Rutherford County rabies control unit.

A judge will decide their fate. James Jowers, owner of the dogs, said he would have the Rottweilers destroyed regardless of what the courts decide. "It's unfortunate too, because they're not aggressive in any way," Jowers said. A deputy retrieved the boy's arm and rushed it to Vanderbilt with the boy. It was severed at the shoulder, witnesses said.
